Learning Comes Alive at Newport Primary Out-of-School Time Programming

At Newport Primary School, students thrive through strong academics, differentiated instruction, hands-on STEM learning, and—most importantly—rich, meaningful enrichment made possible through dynamic community partnerships and support from Partners For Change. During our enrichment hour, students explore creative and cultural experiences that expand learning beyond the classroom. From creating visual art alongside professional artists through our partnership with Baker-Hunt Arts & Cultural Center, to discovering music and performance with Band in the Bus, celebrating literacy with the Newport Public Library, and welcoming community members as guest readers, students are building curiosity, confidence, and connection.

One unforgettable experience came when Newport Primary hosted the Newport Aquarium’s traveling educational program. Representatives from the WAVE Foundation’s Finstitute brought live tide pool creatures for students to observe—and even touch. Initial nerves quickly turned into excitement as students met sea stars and hermit crabs up close, many for the very first time. The joy was contagious. As one student wrote in a thank-you note, “Thank you for coming to our school. I love the starfish so much. And crab. You are the best!”

Research from the Centre for Young Lives shows a direct link between quality enrichment opportunities and improved school attendance—particularly for students experiencing poverty. As one finding notes, “Enrichment is likely to be particularly effective at boosting attendance among children and young people in poverty.” That’s why after-school programming must balance academic support with engaging, hands-on enrichment that sparks excitement for learning.

This approach is making a difference. Newport Independent Schools was recently recognized for having the highest attendance rate among River City schools during the 2024–2025 academic year. Through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers after-school program, Partners For Change is proud to support Newport Primary as we continue creating enriching experiences that keep students excited to learn—and coming back each day.
