A Friendship Rekindled: Kylie & Josie's Mentoring Story

Kylie first joined the Partners For Change Elementary Mentoring Program as a student at Latonia Elementary in Covington Independent Schools. There, she was paired with Josie, a young mentee, and the two quickly formed a special bond during their weekly lunchtime meetings.

When Kylie moved to another school district, their mentoring relationship could have ended. Instead, it took on a new form. Determined to stay connected, Kylie and Josie began exchanging handwritten letters—sharing stories, encouragement, and hopes of seeing each other again one day.

That day finally arrived. Thanks to the collaboration between Covington’s Elementary Mentoring Coordinator and Ludlow’s 21CCLC Coordinator, the pair reunited after 502 days apart. Their joyful meeting took place during afterschool programming at Ludlow, where smiles, hugs, and laughter filled the room.

Kylie and Josie’s story is a powerful reminder that mentoring creates bonds that go beyond school walls and schedules. The connections formed can last across time, distance, and change—proof that the gift of mentorship truly makes a lifelong difference.
