Summer Starts Here: How Partner Districts Are Is Creating a Summer of Opportunity for Students
As the school year ends and summer begins, many students face a familiar challenge: the loss of academic momentum during the long break. At the same time, families often struggle to find affordable, enriching summer opportunities that keep children engaged, supported, and safe.
For the partner school districts of Partners For Change, summer marks the beginning of an exciting season of learning through our 21st Century Community Learning Center (21CCLC) summer programs—where learning continues through hands-on experiences, new discoveries, and meaningful connections.
Far more than traditional summer school, these free programs provide students with engaging, hands-on experiences designed to strengthen academic skills while creating opportunities for exploration, creativity, and fun. Across our partner districts, students participate in robotics, arts, physical wellness, STEM activities, college and career exploration, community service, and enrichment experiences intentionally designed to complement core learning and spark curiosity. An additional strength of these programs is the involvement of highly qualified, caring certified teachers who not only provide academic support, but also foster meaningful relationships with students that strengthen connection, confidence, and engagement.
The need for high-quality summer programming has never been greater. According to the most recent America After 3PM survey from the Afterschool Alliance, affordability remains the number one barrier to summer participation, with 35% of families in Kentucky reporting they cannot afford summer programs for their children. Our partner districts help close this gap by offering programs at no cost to families while maintaining a strong focus on quality, youth development, and meaningful student engagement.
Equally important, these programs support working families by providing safe, structured environments where students are cared for, connected, and actively learning. Family engagement remains a key component, with opportunities designed to strengthen connections among schools, families, and community partners.
What makes these programs especially impactful is the intentional planning behind them. Throughout the year, 21CCLC staff collaborate with district leaders, educators, parents, and community organizations to continuously improve programming and ensure students have meaningful summer experiences. This early planning has helped expand opportunities through new partnerships, enhanced family engagement, community support, and exciting new learning experiences. For example, in Erlanger-Elsmere, families were invited to a summer program family engagement night where a student shared highlights and experiences from the previous year’s camp, families received an overview of this summer’s programming, and caregivers had the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about what students can expect
Last summer, more than 800 students across Covington, Newport, Ludlow, and Erlanger-Elsmere regularly attended summer programming. This year promises even more opportunities for discovery. Students will explore community resources through visits to destinations such as the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, Big Bone Lick State Historic Site, Aronoff Center for the Arts, and the Sanitation District No. 1. In classrooms, students may be building in makerspaces, conducting science experiments, writing and performing original plays, exploring future careers, or collaborating on projects that bring learning to life.
Another exciting opportunity this year expands learning even further. Through a collaboration between the school districts, Partners For Change, EducateKY, and Northern Kentucky University, incoming sixth and seventh grade students will have the opportunity to attend a two-week NKU College Bound Camp on campus after district summer programs conclude—extending access to enriching experiences throughout the summer.
Summer learning should be engaging, meaningful, and accessible to every child. We are proud of the high-quality programming happening across our partner districts and excited for another summer of growth, discovery, and opportunity.
If you are interested in visiting a program, we would be happy to schedule a visit and share more about the exciting experiences taking place this summer.
With so much planned across our partner districts, each summer program offers its own unique opportunities for learning, creativity, and exploration.
